Signs a parent may need help
- Unopened mail, missed bills or missed appointments
- Less food in the fridge, or spoiled food
- A recent fall, or new bruises they can't explain
- Stopping activities they used to enjoy, such as church, temple or seniors' groups
- Wearing the same clothes, or skipping showers
- A spouse who looks exhausted
Where to start
Most families start small, with one or two visits a week for meals, housekeeping and rides. Then they add personal care as needed. We'll visit your parent's home, talk with them and suggest a schedule. Your parent has a say in it all.
What regular visits can prevent
Regular visits let someone notice small changes before they become big problems. We can remind your parent about medication, encourage them to eat and drink, reduce fall risks and let you know when something's changed.
Getting around Abbotsford
If your parent has stopped driving, we can take them to appointments, the grocery store or a seniors' centre. See rides and escorts.
Having the conversation
Parents often say no to help at first. It can help to start with what they want, such as staying in their own home, instead of what they can no longer do. We can also come for an informal chat. See our guide on questions to ask a home care provider.
Common questions
Can care start with just one visit a week?
Yes. Many families start with one or two visits, then adjust.
Can you help in a retirement home or assisted living in Abbotsford?
Yes, we can add one-on-one support if the residence allows it. We can help with outings, company and extra personal care.
